Roofing Components – Learning To Speak Builder
Have spent much of the day trying to understand what the hell my mech sub-contractor is on about. He has been telling me where he’s going to put his screws (not as funny as it sounds), but it seems all builders speak Klingon. I didn’t know half of these words so have made myself a translation slide – though you guys might find it useful if you ever need to sort a purlin from a rafter, or if, like me, you don’t believe that underlayment is really a word.

Yes the language is in fact Builderbull and has many, many more terms insinuated in the details you provide. I give some below … making appropriate corrections to the terms used:
Barge board…(aka facia board) as indicated in drawing
Bats ( aka insulation bats)…. Either furry bird-like (see Birdstooth) creatures living in roof spaces or something not shown on these drawings and …….I would have thought pretty important for you M&Es….usually a fire resistant material placed between the rafters …. making sure that the place doesn’t need MASSIVE H&V plant
Birdstooth…the cut made in the end of the rafters to fit and spike (see Spike) wall plate (see Wall plate)
Cheek …. Side vertical face of dormer (see Dormer)
Cripple… the rafter from the ridge board or hip board not generally ending in the wall plate ( see Hip board and Wallplate)
Dormer… little house like think sticking out of the roof giving it the impression of Little House on the Prairie
Spike….a dog in the Tom and Jerry cartoon
Hip-board…..the board forming the edge of the hid-end to which the hip-rafters (see Hip rafter) are spiked (see Spike)
Hip rafter…. a rafter on the hip end
Underlayment…(aboriginal form of underlay) ….the membrane covering the rafters help in place by the battens
Wallplate…. A bit of timer on the top of the wall permitting the birds-toothed (see Birds tooth) rafters and ceiling joist to be spiked (see Spike)
….and many many more……………
Half of those terms could be used to describe the teaching staff or the various medical devices needed to get them into and out of their offices………..
I can see the connection between brace and John, but who gets flashing (gigidi) and who is the dripping edge?
