A comedy of errors

So this week has highlighted a couple of things that can go wrong when you don’t pay attention to what is going on site. In order to keep this short.   I have drawn up my top 3 list of needless errors.  So you can understand my pain.

In reverse order.

Spot the oddity

3.  A column orientated in the wrong direction.  If you look to the left of the wall you will see a column orientated left to right and not up and down.  The bars had to be cut out and drilled 800 mm then grouted  in the right direction.  See below.  Cause lack of supervision and not looking at the drawings.

Cutting the bars then redrilling to change orientation.

2.  Concrete Placing Boom 200 mm off centre.  You will notice a pad footing with an metal X on top.  This was 200 mm out so instead of halting the pour and reforming, the ‘engineer’cracked on – this has a major impact all the way up the tower but heyho he has quit.

1.  The plumber who are sorting the drainage for site were due to backfill around the water tanks with gravel (in top left of photo).  They decided to save a buck and used recycled concrete.  Not a problem I was on site and when they were dropping it in and although this is not my area, I am responsible for environmental issues, so I asked them for their free from contamination certificate – they didn’t have one.  I gave them time to chase it down but they still didn’t have one.  We have now had a union walkout for potentially importing asbestos on to site.  Cause – lack of supervision and corner cutting by subbie.  Solution take a sample then cover in concrete -bung the union 20k. Discuss!

My all time personal favourite screw up is taking or giving verbal instructions and not following them up in writing. I reckon that people doing this on sites I have worked on or when working for me has cost the Client or their boss upwards of £1M collectively over the 10 year period I was working as a PQE or with BAA. It is probably quite a bit more than that, but I am on holiday so a SWAG will have to do.

Jim – Another classic cause and this is not however limited to the construction industry. My personal favourite is the flip side of this – sending an email and not following up, just assuming it will get actioned because you sent an email. Enjoy the Northern hemisphere it a freezing 24 C in Brisbane.

    Doug,

Looks like the lower props are out without the floors being constructed – how did you resolve the problem?

Which lower props are you referring too?

Hi Doug, I thought you had 2 layers of propping and I could only see one layer.

Nope, one level of props and 3 levels of ground anchors. I was looking at propping off the capping beam to get the props out but that has fallen through. We are now building over and it’s going to be a hell of a ride.

They built a new maths block at Warwick University facing 180 degrees the wrong way when I was there (a long time ago). The balcony that was meant to be overlooking the sports pitches stared directly into the ‘Science and Technology’ center!
