Self build crane

A few weeks ago someone asked how cranes can self build. My neighbouring job is, as I type, building the next level of the crane. The sections of tower are placed on the platform to the left of the tower and the tower is the jacked up so the next section can slide in. You can see one piece about to be slid in and the next on the hook.

The first piece has been slid in and the crane is jacking itself up to take the second piece.
I need to have a word with myself because I thought this was cool.

Self-building cranes ARE cool.
Do I detect a hint of sarcasm in there James? Self climbing cranes are definitely better than those ordinary boring ones.
No sarcasm at all. I love a good crane.
We’ve got a crane which is currently anchored into the foundation at basement level and when it gets above level 14, it is going to jack itself up, a new grillage will be inserted, cantilevered from the structure and the crane will then be used to remove its own lower sections of the tower below Level 14. This is all because the podium (up to Level 14) has a bigger footprint than the tower. The crane sits within the podium but external to the tower structure so by stripping the lower sections, the penetrations in the slab can be filled at a much earlier stage and the podium levels completed ready for separable portion handover. If they did not do this, the crane would have to be present to the end of the build. Just a shame I won’t be around to see it happen.
Wow that’s seriously ballsy.
It looks pretty simple in the staging diagrams although I sense the reality will prove otherwise.
That is one very ugly looking building.
Tell me about it – that is the carpark that is supposed to link into their phase 2. They are demolishing the legacy building that was standing their as we speak. Demo is clearly going well as they have hit a gas main and shut down my site.
