Phase 2 Placements

To all C’s,

The time is now upon us students in phase 1 to start looking for our placements. There are at least 7 of us staying in the UK, with the majority looking to work in London.

Do you know of any interesting projects coming up within your companies that would be good for us to jump on in March 17, or will there still be work on your sites which we could take over, and if so can you give us an outline of what that work would involve?

Finally, do you have any tips for finding placements other than scanning through Construction Enquirer which it currently our main point of reference. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Laurie,

Good to hear from you, I hope Ph1 is going well. Unfortunately I can’t help with London placements but can offer advice to anyone thinking of Aus. Please offer my email address to anyone considering a placement down-under… andy.bayley@multiplex.global … For specifics, Mike Parton is in Perth, Doug Nelson – Brisbane, Jo Charlton – Melbourne, James Grant and myself – Sydney. All the best with the rest of Ph1 and finding a placement.

      Laurie,

I can only echo Andy’s message – no help at all on London placements, but can definitely try and help out with Oz placements. If any of the 7 that are fixed on staying in the UK are even remotely tempted by life down under I would urge you to give it some real thought.
My email, if needed is james.stewart.grant@gmail.com.

Laurie, it seems only the Oz lot are awake. I am in Brisbane but, if any of the guys that are coming to Oz have kids I can probably help. My email address is dougnelson33@hotmail.com or work: doug.nelson@multiplex.global Good luck with the search for placements and enjoy sucking from the fire hydrant that is Phase 1 (it will be over before you know it).

Gents. See below for the email that I sent to the SI regarding the Tideway East Chambers Wharf site. See also website here: https://www.tideway.london/the-tunnel/construction-sites/chambers-wharf-bermondsey/

“I think this site is shaping up nicely for a future attachment (JM visited me on site and thinks there are one or two more attachments left in this site). In hindsight I think my involvement came at too early a stage in the project but I have been able to shape their commitment for developing a future PET student.

The role available is at the Chambers Wharf site as a Site Engineer, although all of the Tideway East staff are within the same office so it would be easy to have oversight of the other sites that are just coming online too. They will initially report directly to the Section engineer responsible for the D-wall and excavation of the 60m deep shaft. I have also implemented that they would do an initial round robin of the departments for the first few weeks so that they can achieve a base level of knowledge and gather insight for AER 1.

They will also have 2-3 monthly progress and performance reviews with their line manager.

I am happy to act as the PoC until I leave if it helps, and host a site visit for anyone that’s interested in this site.

If any of the Phase 1s want to ask any questions they can reach me on 07791 382079.”

    Regards,

    Tony

    Phase 1s,

I would recommend the Northern Line Extension. Big NEC3 contract, national infrastructure and something different to traditional structures.

To get the full background have a look at some of my earlier blogs. There are four sites to the project, Battersea, Nine Elms and Kennington shafts. TBM tunnelling is due to start in March. I really don’t think that tunnelling will offer much to a PET student as it will be very repetitive and of limited utility (I think) but you will still get some good exposure to it. Kennington shafts are almost finished where they will start on the step plate junctions into the existing Northern Line, again limited utility but possibly provide a few months if you wanted some exposure.

The main areas of opportunity I would say are the Battersea Station Box or Nine Elms. Both are top down excavations largely RC and steel. Nine Elms box is about half the size of Battersea Station, which has its own pros and cons. At Nine Elms Secant Piling is still ongoing but the first floor slab was cast a few weeks ago. At Battersea, diaphragm walling is due to finish in March but the first section of the box gets handed over this week.
The project is a 50:50 joint venture between Ferrovial and Laing O’Rourke. Management understand the requirements of CPR and happy to let you seek your own experience. As usual you should be prepared to ask for it.

Definitely worth a consideration if you are stuck for a placement.

Happy for anyone to call me if you have any questions; 07866915414.

I’ve been told nobody is that keen on Birmingham, however let me know if there is any interest. Carillion have a huge development here and are winning subsequent builds so there will be work from demolition to construction in this area.

They also have good fingers in the pies of Ramboll, Mott Macdonald and a few smaller design agencies. The Project Director is very wilco and willing to have more attachments under his watch.

They have a JV for HS2 with the design office in Brum but I do not know too much about that at the moment.
