Foundations in congested ground
EXP-487-SK002 – In ground services clash review BH responses TS markupI’m looking at the foundations for a new elevated walkway at Wembley Stadium. The ground is pretty congested with services thanks to those pesky M&E critters. Needless to say the SSPs are saying it’s absolutely impossible for them to abandon or move anything so i’ve got to bridge over them. Anyone got any references for good guidance on these issues?
Update following RFs comments:
This is just conceptual considerations however, linked
(randomly inserted at the top of the page) is the latest of the clashes discussions I’ve been having with the services coordinator. My current aim is to work out if the foundations are achievable, meaning identify the types of problems we have (eccentrically loaded pile caps, services under pile caps, services adjacent to piles/caps) and say what the possible solutions might look like.
Sorry Tony,
Not much help without a little more input info. Where’s the walk way from-to? how long, what height, what sort of traffic? Is it a mundane engineering thing or are we talking architectural statements? What are the constraints on the site boundary? You’re obviously at concept stage so there’s all sorts of scope for how you go about it. Main need is a decent survey and services drawing, which I would then make arrangements to have proven on the ground because I don’t trust most service scans and as built drawings.
Rich,
Trial pits are ongoing but for now I’m just working off the dwg linked above. Very much conceptual at the minute. Looking at the types of problems and potential solutions.
(new foundations are grey; old are clear)
OK. You need a section through it to know what space you’ve got to play with for transfer beams/cantilevers and some idea of the vertical and horizontal actions coming down onto each pile cap. You also need to have a conversation with the engineer dealing with the walkway structure to know how much flexibility there is in the locations of footings before redesign pain is severe. If you can’t change the support requirements to the walk way then you just need to decide at what level you are going to transfer these sideways and how in order to fit with the options beneath. It’s all just constraints at concept stage…
