An NHS View On ‘Military Planning’

I stumbled across an interesting perspective on ‘military planning’ in the British Medical Journal here: https://www.bmj.com/content/369/bmj.m2055.  It offers a valuable external perspective on how we work, plan and operate which should serve as a useful reminder for those who are growing comfortable in their civilian attire. Have a read, and for those in Ph3 moving to Ph4 it will serve as a timely reminder and look forward to….

I think it is interesting to note that there is not only a distiction between the NHS planner and the military but also an unspoken distinction between the military and civilian construction industry counterpart. The military planners referred to are actually engineers backed by a technical understanding of what it takes for decisions and designs to be implemented and a collegiate approach to delivery. The two quotes that stand out for me are “They take the instruction and operationalise that for you at great speed.” And, “the attitude is one of problem solving not blame”. There is much to proud of in that.
