Distributed computing
Off topic for the blog but on topic for the current climate. For those of you writing up your thesis and other academic work then why not consider using your spare computing power to look for the achilles heel of COVID-19?
I’ve signed up to folding@home – a distributed computing model that utilises spare CPU and GPU power , why not give it a go? All you old bitcoin miners out there dig out the rigs and put them to use again!!
Changes to Journal access
A little off topic but this is probably the easiest way to get the massage out to everyone in terms of thesis research (well most of you!!). Cranfield have moved from Shibboleth to OpenAthens in terms of sign in for Journals – hopefully you have noticed this and the lack of e-mails back mean that your access is working OK. If it isn’t the case then you can contact libraryresources@cranfield.ac.uk and let them know the sites you are trying to access.
Access to journals will be a crucial part of your thesis literature review so please don’t leave it too late.
UKSPEC and E5
All
I thought I’d share this little document with you for anyone looking at competence E5 and thinking ???. Don’t worry – some of the PEIs aren’t exactly sure however this competence is based around the Engineering Council’s statement of ethical principles (2014) so that’s the place to start. The document is a good read (E&Ms will know where the car chase is likely to be) and can be found at http://www.engc.org.uk/engcdocuments/internet/Website/Statement%20of%20Ethical%20Principles.pdf
Hope that helps those pondering this competence.
Thesis Forum
If this appears twice I’m sorry! In a previous reply to Nick I said I’d make a forum on the ELE to discuss how the thesis submission process is going (rather than using your blog). The forum is here: http://rsme-insite.co.uk/mymoodle/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=189 We’ll keep it open until you have finished and submitted.
Look forward to hearing from you!
Spotted in Yahoo news, does anyone have a confession to make?!!
Meanwhile, in Australia, a piece of Banksy artwork valued at around \$50,000 (£31,100) has been accidentally destroyed by builders.
The parachuting rat was painted about 15 years ago on a wall in Prahran in Melbourne and has been a proud fixture of the area ever since.
However, it was ruined when builders smashed a hole so that they could put new pipes into the building.
Resident Tina McKenzie told ABC News Australia: “They’ve sawn into the side of the building without actually saying anything.
“But then, that’s builders… they wouldn’t even think”
Ms McKenzie has had dealings with Banksy, and said she was going to send him an email to say a TV crew had been out to film the incident.
When asked what he would do she said: “Well, he would probably laugh that there’s so much attention around something that he’s just done as a part of his lifestyle every day!”j
I know……I’ve said it before
That’s why I copied the initial post I sent last month!!!
There are a few people setting up or contemplating their own blogs outside of this one (the ones that I’ve seen look good – Geeks!) As this is a trial we cannot and do not want to stifle this but could you ensure that, as a minimum:
1. You include a link on this site to your blog.
2. Control access to your blog in a manner similar to this one – whilst we are trialling this as a concept we need to ensure that any issues occur within a controlled environment, no “lessons identified”; we will use “lessons learnt” as our mantra.
3. Publicise changes or interesting developments in your blog to all – one of the key elements of a blog is the ability to share information and knowledge and, in order to do so, we need some form of update,
There will always be exceptions; DO NOT produce a blog outside of this environment if you are working on anything sensitive (commercial or otherwise) or if your employer does not sanction the production of such a site or the posting of such information.

And another thing….. I just thought it would be useful at this stage to encourage you to use tags on your posts. As the site mature and blogs get longer (especially if you use “uncategorized”) you may find you want to use tags to be able to group together some common themes. Why not start with “roads” and “walls” as tags – in fact that’ll do won’t it?
