Industry Lessons Learned?

I received the following document (Dated April 16) this morning. At this early stage there is nothing to prove (That I have heard) the recent tragic accident is related to the issues outlined in this report. That aside, in the continued interest of professional competence and safety going forward its definitely worth a quick read.

    Interesting memorandum Tom, luckily the buildings structure was reinforced concrete and not steel otherwise it could have been a much worse incident. Although potentially then a cladding system wouldn’t have been required.

    Further to this on reading an article from the Construction Enquirer;

    ‘The cladding system employs a void behind the panel to vent moisture. An intumescent strip is designed to be installed at regular intervals to expand in the event of fire to become a cavity barrier.’ The void is thought to of acted as chimney, allowing the fire to spread so quickly.

    The cladding subcontractor Harley Curtain Wall and main contractor Rydon, which delivered the upgrade to the Grenfell Tower also delivered a bigger project, the Chalcot Estate in Swiss Cottage. The estate has five tower blocks; Taplow, Bray, Burnham, Dorney, and Blashford. Hopefully there will be ongoing test on these cladding systems and the intumescent strip to assess its suitability, and to rectify if this is the cause.

      I believe chatting to numerous people in the industry that NHBC have been banging the drum about regulations surrounding this void and the potential to act as a chimney. When the dust settles on this I suspect there will be vast regulation changes. I think now would be the time to set up a sprinkler system retro fit company. If I was E&M…..
